We
are giving a whole new meaning to being star struck!
In
November,
the Virginia
Air & Space Center commissioned
local artist, Sam Welty to create a giant mural
inside the lobby. The mural depicts a dramatic
scene of the
Solar System and covers an entire wall 30-foot wide.
This new space scene now greets visitors as they
enter through the front doors and is even more
impressive
at night when it is illuminated and clearly visible
from the street.
Artist
Sam Welty has lived in Hampton Roads for more than
five years. With more than 25 years of
experience
Sam has an extensive portfolio of work. Locally,
he has created artwork for De Paul Hospital in Norfolk,
the Virginia Zoo, Mahi Mah’s Restaurant in
Virginia Beach, the Coffee Connection in Downtown
Hampton,
and more. He has also produced several murals for
Navy Ships and Oceana-based squadrons,
as well as countless works in personal homes. Sam
chose to be
an artist because he likes to create pieces that
provoke thought and emotion. “I love that
every day presents a new challenge. The best thing
about what
I do is the fact that I can affect people’s
lives and share my art and expression. That’s
a great feeling.”
