Volunteer Spotlight

"Good volunteering creates great communities"

- Dave Minniear

PhotoWhile working as a field service engineer with McDonnell Douglas, Dave attended a Langley Air Force Base briefing about the plan to open the VASC and was immediately interested in the project. In 1991, when the VASC was under construction, you could find Dave with a hard hat on, watching as construction crews built the building around the F-4 aircraft. Ever since, Dave has served as a Center docent, interpreting our exhibits for visitors, and has accomplished more than 3000 hours of service. Earlier in 2013, and much to his surprise, Dave received the VASC Volunteer of the Year award.

Dave is at the museum at least once every week, leading tours through the aviation and space galleries as well as training other docents. He and fellow docent Scotty Springston have worked many hours to create an intense, 6-hour training program for new docents. He is always looking for new recruits! For Dave, one of the best parts of being a docent is getting to interact with folks from all over the world, including New Zealand! He has fun sharing his personal history and stories from his long engineering career. His enthusiasm enables visitors to understand science and technology and their importance in our local & national economy. Dave helps spark imaginations!

Thank you Dave for your selfless dedication to the Virginia Air & Space Center and its mission to educate, entertain and inspire explorers of all ages. And thank you to State Farm agent Jack Lubore for recently honoring Dave and his service with a Silver Star. We are so thankful for great neighbors!

Docent & Volunteer Opportunities:

Docent/Tour Guide: The Docent -- a volunteer educator -- provides tours of the Center for groups of all ages, interpreting the Center's artifacts and displays to illustrate concepts and ideas. Most Docent participation occurs on weekday mornings. Some weekday afternoons and weekends may also require Docent-guided tours.

Special Events Assistant: Assists during Special Events in manning information or activity tables, decorating, and interacting with visitors during public openings and special promotions, STEM Saturdays and Center Public Engagement events, Birthday Parties, Community Outreaches and other featured Center activities.

Greeters: Welcome visitors and share information regarding the Center's features, contents, and IMAX films, and they also are frequently called upon to provide general information regarding local restaurants, historical sites, and appropriate parking facilities. Greeters are on duty most often on weekends, during holiday seasons, and throughout the summer.

Office Aide: Volunteers may be requested to assist various Center offices (Education, Marketing and Development, Administrative, etc.) on an "as needed" basis. Tasks may require typing, filing, sorting, and mailing. At times, volunteers are called upon to assist with special promotions and other sales-related activities within the Center's public/visitor areas.

Floor Activities Assistant: Serves in various activities such as ticket checkers, Gift Shop helpers, distributors of questionnaires to visitors, and helpers with floor demonstrations and children's make-and-take activities. Volunteers who serve in this capacity are called upon primarily for weekends, special events, some holidays, and on certain summer season weekdays.

VASC Ambassador: VASC Ambassadors are student-aged volunteers who serve as science camp assistants. The responsibilities of the VASC Ambassadors who are assigned to a camp include helping with the daily camp set-ups, assisting the instructor by working with the individual campers throughout the day as needed, and assuring the accountability and safety of the individual campers in class, during lunch, and during all out-of-classroom activities. Ambassadors may also be called upon to assist with children's make-and-take activities on weekends.
