SMALLab (Learning Lab: In-House Only)

Fraction Lab MATH SOLs: 4.2,4.3,5.2

Students will review all things fractions and decimals. Fraction Lab is great as an introduction to the idea of fractions and decimals or for reviewing these concepts. During Fraction Lab, students will explore fraction comparisons and equivalency by creating equivalent fractions and comparing fractions with similar and different denominators. Students can also use their knowledge of dividing fractions and place their answers in order from least to greatest or greatest to least. While playing a memory game students will match a fraction to its equivalent decimal.

Moon Lab: Moon Lab SCIENCE SOLs: 3.8a, 4.8

Students will learn why the Earth cannot survive without the Moon in this hands-on collaborative lab. Students must identify the differences between waxing and waning cycles in order to successfully complete our memory board. Moon Lab is an interactive activity that uses images provided by NASA to introduce students to the phases of the moon or review the moon phases. Students are challenged to arrange the moon phases in order, starting with the New Moon. This activity includes eight images of the moon as well as the names of the lunar cycle to help students to have a full understanding of our moon’s phases.

Galaxy Lab SCIENCE SOLs: 4.7, 4.8

Planets in our solar system can be divided into two groups: inner planets and outer planets. These planets share many similarities, but also have unique characteristics. Galaxy Lab challenges students to correctly identify the similarities and differences between these two groups of planets. Using NASA images, students will be challenged to order the planets from the smallest to largest and from closest to furthest from the Sun. What would the solar system look like if we shrunk if down to 60ft long? Discover what makes each of the eight major planets in our solar system unique


Space Freeze

Why is liquid nitrogen so important to NASA? Explore the effects of extreme temperature change on the different phases of matter. Create a cloud in your classroom! Can we freeze air? Discover what happens when metals get just as cold as space.


Bring on the Noise

SOL: 5.2 (Interactive Demo)

Explore how sound waves are created! Compare sound traveling through the different phases of matter. See a laser light show that explores the effects of change in frequency, pitch, and amplitude of sound vibrations. What does a compression wave look like? Investigate factors affecting pitch using different musical instruments.


Earth-Moon-Sun

What causes the sun to rise and set every day? Learn how the Earth’s four seasons are caused. Learn the difference between the geocentric model of old and the heliocentric model of today (and the philosophers and scientists that introduced each theory to us). Classify the different phases of the Moon and discover how they occur through a hands-on activity!


Gross Science

Learn all about the food web that keeps all of Earth’s ecosystems healthy. Explore the producers, consumers, and decomposers of different habitats. What is the difference between a food web and food chain? What can you learn from dissecting owl pellets? See what a mosquito’s nose looks like and discover why they want your blood!


Lighten Up

Explore light and the electromagnetic spectrum. How are light waves different from sound waves? Create your own rainbow! What makes an object transparent, translucent, or opaque? Study the difference between reflection and refraction, and find out how light can bend!


Living Planet

SOL: 3.5; 3.6; 3.9d-e; 3.10a; 4.5 (Learning Lab)

Play a board game to explore the Earth’s different ecosystems! Discover how behavioral and physical adaptations help animals survive. Compare and contrast an aquatic and terrestrial ecosystem and learn what a habits needs to provide the plants and animals living there.


Mad Scientist

How do we use the scientific method in our everyday lives? Learn about some of the world’s most famous scientists. Using scientific instruments, learn how we can measure density. Participate in a completely hands-on experiment!


Master Machines

What are the six types of simple machines? How can they be combined to create compound machines? Identify the simple machines that we use every day. Discover how levers can help lift heavy objects!


Matter of Fact

Explore how temperature affects the different phases of matter with liquid nitrogen! Learn the distinguishing properties of solids, liquids, and gases. What are the different parts of the atom? How can we identify different elements? View the Periodic Table of Elements. Study the difference between elements, compounds, and mixtures.


Moon Colony

Take a trip to the future as we colonize the Moon! Compare and contrast surface conditions on the Moon and Earth. Determine what humans would need to sustain a lunar colony. Work in teams to build a model lunar colony!

Did you know there’s science in roller coasters?! Investigate the forces that are at work in our everyday lives. Learn all about gravity, potential and kinetic energy, and friction by building your own roller coaster!

What are tectonic plates? Discover how earthquakes and volcanoes are created. View the globe without ocean waters to discover tectonic plate boundaries. What caused Hawaii to form? Determine the origins of the rock types.


Electricity

SOL: 4.3a-d, f (Interactive Demo)

How is electricity created? Gain an understanding of how a flow of electrons is generated by copper atoms. Learn the difference between insulators and conductors, as well as series and parallel circuits. Observe lightning right in your classroom with a Jacob’s Ladder! Using a Van de Graaff generator, experience static electricity as it travels right through your body!


Hands-on Learning Programs

Interactive curriculum-enhancing programs and demonstrations teach the basic principles of science, aviation, and space technology. Students are challenged to develop inquiry skills and use hands-on investigation to explore, experiment, and find solutions to scientific problems.
